An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 has killed at least 135 people and injured hundreds of others in the southwest of Pakistan. The epicentre of the event is located about 45 km north of the town of Quetta. Many houses in the vicinity collapsed or were destroyed by landslides resulting from the tremor. It is estimated that around 15,000 people may have been made homeless. Pakistan's second most damaging earthquake occurred near Quetta in 1935, killing almost 30,000 people. Last night's event locates approximately 740 km southwest of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake which occurred in north-eastern Pakistan on 8 October 2005, killing around 80,000 people. SEISMIC ALERT: BROMYARD, HEREFORDSHIRE 18:06 UTC 26 OCTOBER 2008 3.6 ML Further information can be found at the following link: http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/recent_events/uk_special/bromyard_26_oc BGS have received a number of reports from residents in the Herefordshire area of a felt event this evening at 18:06 UTC. Felt reports described "a thump as if someone had jumped off the bed upstairs" and "loud boom noise as though something extremely heavy had fallen on the wood floor above my head". The strength of the shaking has been described as moderate, enough to make furniture shake and windows and crockery rattle. Some reports indicate that people were woken from sleep and a few were frightened, indicating an intensity of at least 4 EMS. Today’s event locates approximately 17 km southeast of a magnitude 2.4 ML earthquake which occurred on 17 September 1993. Historicaly, the largest earthquake to have occurred in this area was a magnitude 5.3 event on 17 December 1896.
